The Missouri Supreme Court on Tuesday
(2002-02-26) reversed the death sentences but upheld the murder convictions
of a man involved in a 1996 home robbery and shooting in Jefferson County.
The state’s highest court ruled
that Carman Deck’s convictions for the murders of James and Zelma Long
will stand but overturned two death sentences because of ineffective assistance
from his attorney.
Deck’s attorney failed to note problems
involving missing jury instructions during the death penalty phase of the
case,” the court said.
