Give us grace to prepare for that last hour, by a good life, that we may not be surprised by a sudden death, but be ever watching when Thou shalt call, that so with James we may enter into eternal glory: Through Jesus Christ our Lord. The tragedy lies in having no goal to reach. It is not a calamity to die with dreams unfulfilled. But it is a calamity not to dream. It is not a disaster to be unable to capture your ideal, But it is a disaster to no ideal to capture. It is not a disgrace not to reach the stars. But it is a disgrace not to have stars to reach for. Not failure, but low aim is a sin. Sunward I've climbed and joined the tumbling mirth Of sun split clouds - and done a hundred things You have not dreamed of; wheeled and soared and swung High in the sunlit silence. Hovering there I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung My eager craft through footless halls of air; Up, up the long delirious burning blue I've topped the windswept heights with easy grace, Where never lark nor even eagle flew; And while, with silent lifting mind I've trod The high, untrespassed sanctity of space Put out my hand and touched the face of God. I am I, and you are you; whatever we were to each other, that, we still are. Call me by my old familiar name, speak to me in the easy way which you always used, put no difference in your tone, wear no forced air of solemnity or sorrow. Laugh as we always laughed at the little jokes we shared together. Let my name ever be the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without effect, without the trace of a shadow on it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is unbroken continuity. Why should I be out of mind because I am out of sight? I am waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just around the corner. All is well. A ship at my side spreads her white sails to the morning breeze and starts for the blue ocean. She is an object of beauty and strength. I stand and watch her until at length she hangs like a speck of white cloud just where the sea and sky mingle with each other. Then someone at my side says "There, she is gone." "Gone where?" "Gone from my sight. That is all." She is just as large in mast and hull and spar as when she left my side and she is just as able to bear her load of living freight to her destined port. Her diminished size is in me, not in her. And just at that moment when someone says "There, she is gone" there are other eyes watching her coming, and other voices ready to take up the glad shout - "Here she comes!" by Henry Van Dyke Name: A poem for James by Edna St. Vincent Millay Home Page: Date: Sun Sep 26 7:22:17 2004 Referred By: Comments: TIME does not bring relief; you all have lied Who told me time would ease me of my pain! There are a hundred places where I fear To go,—so with his memory they brim! And entering with relief some quiet place Where never fell his foot or shone his face I say, “There is no memory of him here!” And so stand stricken, so remembering him! Most capital crimes are committed during moments of great emotional stress or under the influence of drugs or alcohol, when logical thinking has been suspended. In such cases, violence is inflicted by persons heedless of the consequences to themselves as well as to others.... If, however, severe punishment can deter crime, then long-term imprisonment is severe enough to deter any rational person from committing a violent crime. The vast preponderance of the evidence shows that the death penalty is no more effective than imprisonment in deterring murder and that it may even be an incitement to criminal violence. The overwhelming conclusion from years of deterrence studies is that the death penalty is, at best, no more of a deterrent than a sentence of life in prison. The Ehrlich studies have been widely discredited. In fact, some criminologists, maintain that the death penalty has the opposite effect: that is, society is brutalized by the use of the death penalty, and this increases the likelihood of more murder. Even most supporters of the death penalty now place little or no weight on deterrence as a serious justification for its continued use. States in the United States that do not employ the death penalty generally have lower murder rates than states that do. The same is true when the U.S. is compared to countries similar to it. Once an inmate is executed, nothing can be done to make amends if a mistake has been made. There is considerable evidence that many mistakes have been made in sentencing people to death. Since 1973, at least 88 people have been released from death row after evidence of their innocence emerged. During the same period of time, over 650 people have been executed. Thus, for every seven people executed, we have found one person on death row who never should have been convicted. These statistics represent an intolerable risk of executing the innocent. The amaricans preaching about stupid sayings like "an eye for an eye". The notion of an eye for an eye, or a life for a life, is a simplistic one which the western society has never endorsed. We do not allow torturing the torturer, or raping the rapist. Taking the life of a murderer is a similarly disproportionate punishment, especially in light of the fact that the U.S. executes only a small percentage of those convicted of murder, and these defendants are typically not the worst offenders but merely the ones with the fewest resources to defend themselves. Although our first instinct may be to inflict immediate pain on someone who wrongs us, the standards of a mature society demand a more measured response. The emotional impulse for revenge is not a sufficient justification for invoking a system of capital punishment, with all its accompanying problems and risks. Our laws and criminal justice system should lead us to higher principles that demonstrate a complete respect for life, even the life of a murderer. Encouraging our basest motives of revenge, which ends in another killing, extends the chain of violence. Allowing executions sanctions killing as a form of 'pay-back.' To the people on here that have to state there feelings, it shows me, the death penalty just causes so much hatred to the public, reading all your posts. Hatred gets you no where in life, forgiveness is the answer. I hope one day that you can find that forgiveness. Perhaps one day you all will need someone, and they will be like you are acting. There is so much hatred in your hearts, its a possibility, and I pray not. James, your artwork is magnificent, and from the heart and soul, and it shows that you are a true person inside. I hope that they turn over your sentence to Life, but because it is Texas, they probably won't. Who ever posted earlier using the term "nigger" is completely ignorant and therefore, his opinion is of less value. James, I hope the best for you as an artist. Granted, you killed someone, but pursuing your dream is really admirable when you're locked up behind bars. It shows the willpower you have to live. Secondly, suffering is always wrong, no matter if it encompasses one who has caused suffering or not. Having the death penalty in place is not a deterrent, and with studies it has been proven not to be. Therefore, this is not just an assumption I have made, it is a fact. Rehabilitation might not always work, but the attempt at doing so is a worthy cause and people should push forward to see it happen for more inmates. Since then, my sleep has been disturbed by nightmares about his upcoming execution. Two things which really bother me are 1) how many of you bring up the $300 issue and 2) Texas's commutation of Henry Lucas's death sentence. Personally, I would never get a good night's rest if I commuted Lucas's sentece and executed Allridge. As for the $300, your attitude makes me think you feel the crime would be less significant if Mr. Allridge robbed a bank rather than a convenience store. I was undecided about the death penalty until I was recently summoned for jury duty. When I finally had to fill out a questionnarie and make up my own mind and stand on my own principals....I knew it was a terrible thing and that I had no right to take another human's life. If Jesus walked among us today on earth, He would certainly forgive you (as He already has if you have sincerely repented of your crime and asked Him to come into your life as your Lord and Savior). To have the "mind of Christ" is a hard thing but if one asks themselves "what would Jesus do," things would be a lot clearer. People would be able to forgive one another. I know it would be extremely hard to forgive such a crime but if one cannot forgive, it will only eat away at them until they are spiritually dead within. The movie beautifully portrays how corrupt and decayed the system is. Yet, I find the movie oddly inspiring, as it shows such hope and beauty within the inmates that are confined. The movie brings hope - in humanity itself. But keep in mind, James, if you do walk the final walk - and your heart is right with God, then the place you are going to will NOT be about confinement anymore. You will be as free as a dove. Nothing on this earth can be compared. You will be given a new body, a new name, you will neither be black or white, and your sins on earth will be FORGOTTEN! As a person who's ALWAYS stood firmly in SUPPORT of the death penalty, I sometimes bump into other stories of inmates (like yourself) and find myself RE THINKING my stand on the death penalty. I truly believe that YOU can be rehabilitated and that perhaps you ARE a productive member of society. But I also feel that NOT everyone CAN be rehabilitated, nor should they. I read your story with interest about the girl and the (tiger?) who had lost her hand - your reference to inmates being treated like "animals" thus, ACTING like animals made a lot of sense. But you do have to admit that SOME inmates acted like animals BEFORE they were incarcerated - namely, for example, TED BUNDY. This man acted with total DISREGARD to human life, he serially had taken- SAVAGELY- NUMEROUS innocent lives - this was not a "heat of the moment" act in passionate ang Name: Kevin S. But the bottom line is, STOP TREATING THESE MURDERING SCUM LIKE 'VICTIMS!' I know many people who had crappy childhoods, who didn't get the bike they wanted (or whatever lame excuse these creeps give) and these people turned out JUST FINE. It's terrible and uncivilised. Even for the guilty death is not right and in james's case he is probably just another black american who received an unfair trial because of his colour in front of a [probably] all white racist jury. I am very impressed by his warmth and intelligence. It would be a terrible crime to execute him - he should be released back into society where he has much to contribute. His elder brother has already been executed for the same crime James is incarcerated for. Enough is enough, release James now. There is no redeeming value in killing as a form of punishment. It is not an effective deterrent. It undermines and destroys respect for human life. It appeals to our basest instincts. It is long past time that we abolish the death penalty in Texas and the nation and recommit ourselves to a more just and humane society. The death penalty has always been used disproportionately against the poor, the blacks, and other minorities. James E. Ferguson, II Charlotte Attorney Name: Honarble James Exum Home Page: Don't Have One Date: Wed Jan 24 23:02:11 2001 Referred By: Myshel Suggs Comments: That the State administers the death penalty hardly diminishes its brutality. It is, pure and simple, the killing of another human being. It is the grossest tit for tat. When the State say this or that human being is not worth saving, it cheapens the rest of us; it brutalizes the rest of us; and we become a more violent society.
